Starting the Weekend off with a bang . . .

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=local&id=5339397

So this afternoon while I was  attempting to do something remotely resembling  work, the power in our office  went out for a few seconds. As the lights and pc's flickered back on, there was a loud boom from the east of the building when I looked out the window I saw this dark plume of smoke float past.
At this point there was a bit of a panic amongst my coworkers. When I tried to look out the window, I saw a manhole was blown open still with smoke so I figured a transformer blew up probably not too big of a deal. At this point however, we had started to evacuate the office, I could sense the anxiety of my coworkers as we headed toward the the fire exits.
Before heading down I gave Frank a call to see if he heard of anything going down on Exchange Pl, he said he didn't hear anything at the time but later he told me right after I called it came over dispatch. Anyway we get down to the first floor and to the outside. The fine men and women of the Jersey City Police and Fire Depts were already on scene. Turns out a transformer did blow up and took a car along with it and all is well in chilltown.

However, what is bugging me out a bit, is the fact that my thought processes when this started going down were along the lines of the following:

1. Damn I'm going to have to log back in again to finish work, that's annoying.
2. Oh, it's just a manhole blowing up, no biggie.

At this point, the decision was made to evacuate so my thoughts went to:

3. I know your suppose to just go, but fuck that it's just a transformer blowing out no "turrist" I';m grabbing my bag.
4. Man, I hope I don't have any problems getting my car.
..........
5. Hey it's that hot chick from the 9th floor.

In fact, Item 4 was really my primary concern. After everything calmed down I was hanging out with a few coworkers at the bar across the street and they were talking about how they were scared for a bit the the explosion happened meanwhile I was just thinking how I was never scared, more annoyed at being inconvenienced.

Anyway, a common theme among writers and philosophers throughout history is the idea that during times of a crisis, you find out the true character of a person. Now granted this might not completely qualify as a full on crisis, but for the brief period of uncertainty between the explosion and getting outside it was pretty close. With that in mind, does that mean I'm a bit of a self absorbed prick ?
